Ford Acquires Software Company Livio to Further Advance In-Car Connectivity Leadership

  • Ford builds on in-car connectivity leadership by acquiring startup application developer Livio
  • The deal allows the companies to share technologies, intellectual properties and engineering talent as they work toward creating an industry standard for in-car connectivity

Ford today announced it will acquire Livio, a Ferndale, Mich.-based software development startup. The move will further extend Ford’s ability to meet consumers’ growing demand for safe, seamless access to the electronic content they love while in their vehicles.

Livio builds products and software tools to support smartphone/car connectivity and has a strong track record of creating in-car connectivity solutions. Ford’s purchase of Livio is designed to accelerate innovation by providing access to each other’s talented engineers and unique intellectual property, as well as enabling both companies to work toward developing an industry standard for smartphone-to-vehicle communications.

“With the additional expertise Livio provides us, Ford intends to continue to lead the next generation of in-car connectivity with technology advancements that give consumers more options to access their devices on the go,” said Paul Mascarenas, chief technical officer and vice president, Ford Research and Innovation.

Ford and Livio are joining forces amid explosive growth in the connected car market. Last year, more than 1.9 million vehicles were delivered with smartphone integration solutions, such as Ford SYNC® AppLink. That number is expected to reach 21 million vehicles by 2018, according to a June report from London-based GSMA, which represents the global mobile industry, and data from SBD, a London automotive technology consulting firm.

Creating an industry standard

Livio’s software-based, advanced vehicle information and entertainment solutions improve the connection between software and hardware. Now, they will help Ford standardize the way customers connect their smartphones to their vehicles.

Ford previously contributed Smart Device Link, the open source version of AppLink, to the GENIVI Alliance for use by app developers.

A single vehicle interface standard gives developers the opportunity to write software faster and more efficiently, providing customers the apps they want to use more quickly. Livio software already is compatible with several commonly used apps and works with all major smartphone devices.

“At Livio, our philosophy is centered on bringing customers more connectivity with less hassle,” said Livio CEO Jake Sigal. “We believe this partnership is an excellent match, as it will give us the ability to work with Ford to provide customers even more access to new technologies in the vehicle infotainment space.”

Livio, co-founded by Sigal and Massimo Baldini, will be a wholly owned subsidiary of Ford Global Technologies, which manages all aspects of intellectual property for Ford. Livio will function as a separate department within Ford Electrical/Electronic Systems Engineering, while integrated into Ford’s overall connectivity operations. The deal gives Ford access to a broad group of application developers, while enabling Livio to maintain its independent and entrepreneurial approach.

SYNC and AppLink pioneering in vehicle connectivity

With its SYNC connectivity system and AppLink application programming interface, Ford was the first automaker in the world to launch an open developer program that enables software developers to directly interface with a vehicle and create apps to enhance the driving experience.
Since SYNC’s debut in 2007, Ford has been the automotive leader in in-car connectivity systems. In 2011, Ford reached a milestone with production of the 3-millionth SYNC-equipped vehicle. By 2015, Ford will have more than 14 million vehicles on the road worldwide equipped with SYNC and 7 million with SYNC AppLink.

Consumer demand for robust in-vehicle connectivity is rising, as the technology and automotive worlds continue to intersect. Ford customers have opted for SYNC and MyFord Touch® on nearly 80 percent of 2013 Ford vehicles.

2015 Ford F-Series Super Duty Features Improved Power Stroke Diesel, Stronger F-450, Revamped King Ranch Edition

Ford, America’s truck leader, introduces the 2015 F-Series Super Duty lineup today at State Fair of Texas, featuring a second-generation 6.7-liter Power Stroke® V8 turbo diesel engine; increased towing capabilities; and a refreshed, Texas-inspired King Ranch model.

Since the 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 turbo diesel debuted in 2011, Ford engineers have listened to customers and continued to examine each component of the engine to develop improved performance.

Ford is the only heavy-duty pickup truck manufacturer that designs and builds its own diesel engine and transmission combination, ensuring the powertrain will work seamlessly with all chassis components and vehicle calibrations – from concept to execution. This approach also enables Ford engineers to optimize the vehicle’s performance across the entire lineup.

A key Ford innovation on the original 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 turbo diesel was its so-called reverse-flow layout. The advanced design places the exhaust inside the engine’s V-shape while the air intake is positioned on the outside of the V. This segment-exclusive design naturally improves a variety of attributes:

  • Shorter airflow from the exhaust system to the turbocharger sitting between the engine’s cylinder banks improves turbo responsiveness – key to providing torque quickly to truck customers when they need it most
  • Positioning the turbo inside the engine’s valley helps isolate the engine’s hottest temperatures, improving performance and efficiency, while also reducing noise, vibration and harshness

Ford engineers built upon the many benefits of this design as they upgraded the Power Stroke. One improvement is a larger GT37 turbocharger that replaces the previous GT32 model, enabling more airflow to the engine to produce more power beyond today’s 400 horsepower and 800 lb.-ft. of torque.

Key components of the new GT37 turbocharger

The GT37 features a single, larger 88-millimeter compressor wheel that replaces the GT32’s dual-sided compressor design. The compressor forces air into the engine’s cylinders to improve performance – especially at high altitude where the air is thinner than at sea level. The turbine size is increased to 72.5 millimeters from 64 millimeters, so exhaust gases have a larger surface area to spin the turbo, providing extra power. The wastegate and the wastegate controls are eliminated, because the turbo operates at lower peak pressures than the GT32.

Second-Generation 6.7-liter Power Stroke® V8 Turbo Diesel Engine

“The original designers of the current Power Stroke V8 diesel forecasted needs for higher output. This facilitated the larger turbocharger, increasing airflow and creating more power,” said David Ives, Power Stroke technical specialist. “We’ve dramatically improved performance while reducing overall engine complexity by focusing on the turbo system.”

A further benefit of the larger turbo is improved engine exhaust braking, manually controlled by a push-button switch on the dashboard. Extra braking power helps reduce wear and tear on wheel brakes and requires less manual brake application from the driver, especially on downhill grades.

Fuel system improvements

Turbo changes drove improvements to the fuel delivery system, specifically a new high-pressure fuel pump and fuel injectors. The pump’s cam stroke is increased to deliver more fuel when desired for increased power. All-new injector tips better atomize the fuel, resulting in improved combustion that enables lower noise, vibration and harshness. Other benefits include cleaner emissions and a reduction in the buildup of fuel deposits on the valves over time.

In addition, a new exhaust temperature sensor enables more accurate fuel control, which improves both durability and driveability – especially when towing – and helps the customer drive the Power Stroke diesel to its maximum capability.

Even though the fuel system delivers extra fuel as needed to provide more power, other efficiency improvements ensure 2015 Ford F-Series Super Duty pickup customers see similar performance to today’s best-in-class fuel economy.

Further enhancements to Ford Power Stroke diesel include:
  • Ford-designed and -engineered 6R140 TorqShift® six-speed transmission uses a new torque converter to manage increased horsepower and torque
  • New polymer coating on main bearings for improved wear-and-tear durability and lower friction
  • Improved crankshaft fillet design – the transition point between the crankshaft’s journals – to increase crankshaft power carrying capability
  • Increased crankshaft damper weight to reduce rotating forces on the crankshaft when the engine is performing at peak power levels
  • New five-layer head gasket to handle wider range of engine firing pressures resulting from more powerful engine performance
  • Added material to the engine’s cylinder heads, exhaust manifold and valvetrain to handle increased power levels
  • Redesigned turbo oil and cooling lines to improve sealing
  • Piston assembly upgrades to increase load-bearing capability
  • New four-layer exhaust manifold gasket for improved durability

2015 Ford F-450 Super Duty

The 2015 Ford F-450 tops the F-Series Super Duty pickup truck lineup with maximum towing and hauling capability. Changes for 2015 include a strengthened frame, suspension, new commercial-grade 19.5-inch wheels and tires, and core work components shared with F-Series Super Duty chassis cab models.

Just as the next-generation Power Stroke engine reflects changes that improve power while maintaining durability, the Super Duty engineering team took specific actions to bolster key F-450 components to improve towing capability, including:
  • Upgraded rear driveline U-joints
  • Upgraded suspension components, including new rear leaf springs, front and rear stabilizer bars and shocks
  • Increased fifth-wheel and gooseneck trailer capacity
  • Stronger steering gears and steering linkages
  • Larger brakes shared with Super Duty chassis cab models, including wheel brakes, parking brake and new antilock brake calibration
  • F-450-specific Power Stroke diesel engine calibration

2015 Ford F-250 Super Duty King Ranch
King Ranch expresses authentic, rugged luxury

The reinvigorated update to the 2015 Ford F-Series Super Duty King Ranch edition is inspired by the place where American ranching was born.

“King Ranch is an American original with a proud heritage of hard work that defines the American ranching lifestyle,” said Doug Scott, Ford Truck group marketing manager. “The 2015 Ford Super Duty King Ranch seamlessly combines elements of Texas-inspired luxury and Ford capability.”

As part of the Ford Truck commitment to continuous improvement, the F-Series design team traveled to King Ranch, founded in 1853, for fresh perspective and inspiration from the 825,000-acre working ranch, which is bigger than the state of Rhode Island.

“What really stood out is how prominent the ‘Running W’ is, and how it defines and unifies the ranch,” said Barb Whalen, Ford color and material design manager. “Similarly, we wanted that brand to define the new Super Duty King Ranch.”

On the new Super Duty King Ranch, the Running W – the brand used on cattle raised at the ranch – provides a focal point for the interior. It is cut out and stitched to make the seat backs and center console appear to have been branded.

A lighter, richer shade of Mesa leather trims the seats, center console lid, armrests and steering wheel.
Exterior updates include the new, darker Caribou paint for the wheel lip moldings, bumpers and lower body. The bed rail caps, bumper caps and running boards are executed in black. The Running W brings focus to the wheel caps as well.

“Through premium materials and thoughtful execution, we strived to make the 2015 Ford Super Duty King Ranch have a look and a feel as authentic as the ranch itself,” said Scott.

United Way for Southeastern Michigan Lights Torch to Kick Off $40 Million Community Giving Campaign

DETROIT, Sept. 27, 2013 Ford Motor Company Chief Operating Officer Mark Fields, who also serves as chair of United Way for Southeastern Michigan’s 2013 campaign, kicked off the annual community giving initiative today with a symbolic torch-lighting ceremony at Detroit’s Hart Plaza.

Fields announced a fundraising goal of $40 million – $5 million more than last year’s target. The funds will accelerate United Way’s work toward improving the first five years of the lives of children in Southeast Michigan to ensure that in 2030, when many are high school seniors, they will graduate as the most college- and career-ready class in the nation.

“There is new energy building in Detroit and the surrounding communities,” said Fields. “Working together, we have a tremendous opportunity to make this a better place to live and work. United Way’s work to prepare children for college and careers is important for families, and for every business looking to grow in Greater Detroit.”

United Way President and CEO Michael J. Brennan attended the event, along with many community members, civic, business and community leaders and other supporters. One of the newest members of the Detroit Lions, Glover Quin, spoke about his support of the campaign.

The lighting of the United Way torch symbolizes a public- and private-sector collaboration to achieve a common goal – making Greater Detroit one of the top five places in the country to live and work by the year 2030. Supporting United Way ensures positive, lasting community change will continue at a grassroots level. The last few years have been financially difficult for the organization, which relies on a combination of individual and corporate contributions, as well as grants, to survive.

“Ford Motor Company and its employees have a long history of generosity and leadership,” said Brennan. “We appreciate the support of the Metro Detroit business community and individuals as we build on the tradition of generous giving in our region, and create remarkable and tangible change in our community.”

MyFord Mobile Data Show Ford Plug-Ins Use Enough Electric-Only Miles to Circle World Eight Times – Every Day

Ford plug-in hybrid vehicles rack up enough electric-only miles every day to drive around the earth nearly eight times – a number rapidly increasing as Ford continues investing in infrastructure while exclusive features like MyFord® Mobile help improve driving habits.

Data show Ford plug-in hybrids are being driven about 203,000 electric miles every day and more than 8,400 miles every hour. The aggregate data are collected through MyFord Mobile, available on Ford’s plug-in vehicles, Fusion Energi and C-MAX Energi, and Focus Electric.

The number of electric-only miles is expected to continue increasing, as data suggest driving habits evolve for new hybrid owners through the use of MyFord Mobile and other features such as SmartGauge® with EcoGuide. After six months, nearly 30 percent of all trips are gas-free compared with about 20 percent at the beginning of vehicle ownership.

Mike Tinskey, Ford global director of vehicle electrification and infrastructure, says MyFord Mobile data showing, among other things, how driving habits evolve and how Ford plug-in hybrids are being used are key to improving the ownership experience for existing and future customers.

“The aggregate data collected through MyFord Mobile take the guesswork out of trying to figure out what we need to do when it comes to making adjustments and continuing to improve,” says Tinskey. “Ford is not being forced to use projections because the company has real customer data to rely on and use for guidance.”

MyFord Mobile – available through the App Store and Google Play – allows drivers to link up with their cars via an embedded AT&T wireless module that provides remote communication with the car to maximize utility and minimize operating costs; a multiyear wireless service subscription is included with every Ford electrified vehicle.

The data provide Ford decision makers with a clear picture of how vehicles are being used and are performing in the real world. A recent analysis found:
  • Charge stations accessible through MyFord Mobile: 20,000
  • Average number of trips between charges: Four
  • Average number of charges per vehicle every week: 6.3
  • Percent of Ford plug-in hybrids using level one charging stations: 70 percent
  • Short trips: 83 percent of one-way trips are of distances 20 miles or less
“The data demonstrate plug-in hybrids are being purchased and used by customers in a way we had hoped, in that they drive many of their trips during the week using electricity only, and call upon their hybrid engine when needed for longer weekend trips,” says Tinskey. “It confirms for us that coupling the right infrastructure with the right product can lead to a strong, positive impact on the planet.”

Beyond the numbers

Ford doesn’t collect information on individual drivers, but aggregates group data so that it can continue to deliver the best possible ownership experience.

For example, should MyFord Mobile data indicate customers aren’t getting the most from their battery when making short trips, customer service might decide to emphasize educating owners about proper use of the EV: Now feature that keeps the vehicle in electric-only mode.

MyFord Mobile data also helped Ford planners identify the need to launch an electrified vehicle charging network for employees. The company recently announced it will soon begin installing electrified vehicle charging stations at more than 50 of its company offices, product development campuses and manufacturing facilities.

Through the program, nearly every Ford facility in the U.S. and Canada will have at least one charging station.

MyFord Mobile evolves

MyFord Mobile has evolved since it was introduced, and now features a charging station finder powered by PlugShare.com, which provides the most comprehensive information available about access to charging stations. In addition to the more than 20,000 public charge stations in the United States and Canada, PlugShare provides data about private stations, too.

Trip & Charge Log is another recent addition to MyFord Mobile, providing instant information about trips, including energy use and average fuel economy, along with an instant score based on driving habits, such as effective use of brakes.
Other features of MyFord Mobile include:
  • Trip Planner: Confirms planned destinations are within the battery’s current range, based on previous driving history; provides tips specific to driving habits to ensure route feasibility; defaults route to a charge station as the final destination
  • My GO Times: Schedules a vehicle to charge and power up at specific times as determined by the owner so the cabin will be most comfortable when ready to go
  • Value Charge Profiles: Charges battery based on electricity rates; provides a list of electrical plans from local utility company to maximize charging needs affordably

Ford launches PowerUp Tour

The Ford PowerUp Tour launches this month in the northeast and western United States. These unique events are designed to help consumers learn about the many benefits of Ford plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles, and assess whether one of these vehicles fits their needs.

During the events, attendees will have the opportunity to test-drive Ford C-MAX Energi, Fusion Energi and Focus Electric against the competition. Trained electric vehicle subject matter experts will provide tips on maximizing the features of these vehicles, including fuel economy and technology capabilities.

Through the tour, Ford hopes to help consumers better understand how affordable plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles can be after considering the cost of ownership and fuel savings, as well as local tax incentives and benefits.

Capt. Stanley Tucker and His Ford Mustangs, Numbers 1 and 1 Million

  • Canadian airline pilot Capt. Stanley Tucker owned two different milestone Ford Mustangs in the first two years of the car’s production
  • After Tucker managed to buy a preproduction Mustang convertible with serial number 1 that was not meant to be sold, Ford traded him that car for a new 1966 convertible – the 1-millionth Mustang produced
By the time the 1965 Ford Mustang officially went on sale on April 17, 1964, it had been rolling off the assembly line at the Rouge factory in Dearborn, Mich., for about five weeks. Thousands of Mustangs had been shipped to dealers throughout North America so they would be available in showrooms on opening day. However, not all of the cars on display were actually meant to be sold to customers.

Among those was a Wimbledon White convertible with serial number 5F08F100001 that had been delivered to George Parsons Ford at the far eastern end of Canada in St. Johns, Newfoundland. That car, along with about 180 other early examples, was not meant to be sold to customers. These preproduction models were supposed to be used for internal testing and promotional purposes only.

The next day, however, Eastern Provincial Airlines pilot Capt. Stanley Tucker saw the sleek new convertible and knew he just had to have it. Tucker convinced Parsons to sell it to him. As more than 22,000 orders and sales had poured in opening weekend, no one back at Ford world headquarters in Dearborn at first realized the significance of that particular sale.

Once it became known a couple of weeks later that Mustang number 1 had been inadvertently sold, Ford officials reached out to Tucker to try to buy it back. Tucker was having so much fun with his new car that he initially declined to sell it back to the company. Eventually, Tucker and Ford struck a deal.

On March 2, 1966, less than two years after Mustang production began at the Rouge assembly plant, Tucker brought the first Mustang back to Dearborn and turned in the keys for a brand-new example. For an encore, Tucker got the 1-millionth Mustang produced – another white convertible.
Ford Motor Company later donated Mustang number 1 to the nearby Henry Ford Museum, where it resides to this day.

Next-Generation Ford Transit Connect Taxi: Taxi of the Future with Increased Space, Performance and CNG/LPG Capability

Ford, America’s commercial truck and van leader, introduces the all-new 2014 Transit Connect Taxi, providing best-in-class performance, low operating costs, and improved comfort and flexibility for the North American taxi market.

The redesigned Ford Transit Connect Taxi was unveiled today at the 2013 International Association of Transportation Regulators Conference in St. Louis. It has been engineered to Ford’s light-truck commercial durability standards.

“We’re leveraging our longtime leadership and expertise in the North American taxi market to ensure Transit Connect Taxi exceeds the expectations of taxi operators and their passengers,” said Tim Stoehr, commercial truck marketing manager for Ford. “Transit Connect Taxi has been popular in major metropolitan cities since it debuted in 2010, and it has only gotten better.”

The 2014 Ford Transit Connect Taxi comes with a new powertrain – the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a new, fuel-efficient six-speed automatic transmission – providing drivers with quick response as well as durability, low-rpm cruising and an expected best-in-class highway fuel economy rating.

Ford Transit Connect will be the only taxi offered with a compressed natural gas/liquefied petroleum gas engine prep package. Conversion to CNG/LPG is supported by a Ford Qualified Vehicle Modifier, enabling significant fuel cost savings.

Improved people mover

The redesign of Ford Transit Connect Taxi features a decreased vehicle height, providing improved clearance for taxicab companies to place advertising on the cabin roof. An interior hood release was added, giving drivers easy access to check fluid levels prior to starting a shift.

The second-generation Transit Connect Taxi is also longer, offering seating for five and increased cargo capacity. The roomy, flexible interior is perfectly suited for livery service and conversion to CNG and LPG. The vehicle’s cargo space accommodates a compressed gas tank, while leaving ample room for luggage and passenger headroom and legroom. It features an anticipated best-in-class 60.5 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the second row.

In contrast to a competitor’s compact van-based taxi, which uses a rear suspension with leaf springs and solid axle, Ford Transit Connect Taxi uses a modern, durable twist-beam rear suspension that prioritizes passenger comfort and cargo carrying capability.

The vehicle’s floor has been lowered for improved access to the cabin, and can be modified to be wheelchair-accessible through Ford’s Qualified Vehicle Modifier program.

Technology for the driver also has been upgraded, with useful options like rear view camera, 6.5-inch touch-screen display with navigation, and SYNC® with MyFord Touch® – Ford’s acclaimed voice-activated mobile communications system.

“The new Transit Connect Taxi has been designed with the for-hire transportation driver and their passengers in mind, creating a product that combines stylish looks and improved comfort with legendary Built Ford Tough quality,” said Gerald Koss, fleet marketing manager for Ford.

Taxi operators will benefit from Transit Connect Taxi’s rigorous testing and durability evaluations, which included opening and closing its sliding doors through 250,000 door-slam cycles.

Ford began offering Transit Connect Taxi with the 2011 model year, providing a commercial vehicle that is tested to the company’s toughest truck standards.

“Transit Connect was originally selected from Ford’s global portfolio of high-quality products to bring the advantages of alternative fuel as well as an outstanding interior package to the for-hire transportation industry,” Stoehr said.

The 2014 Ford Transit Connect Taxi will go into production and arrive in dealerships by early next year.

We’ve all seen hipsters hanging out at the local coffee shop. They look cool and vintage on the outside, even as they constantly check social timelines and post selfies with their smartphones. Restomod Ford Mustangs are the hipsters of the automotive world.

A 1960s-era Mustang looks awesome. Similar to the unlikelihood of finding a hipster sitting in a coffee shop with a computer of the same vintage as the t-shirt they’re wearing, that old Mustang doesn’t accelerate, turn or stop as well as its contemporary descendants and certainly doesn’t ride as well.

A restomod Mustang melds the classic looks of first-generation models from the 1960s with modern engines, brakes, steering and suspension for reliable everyday driving and all-around performance most old muscle cars can’t even approach. You can buy or build what is essentially a brand-new 1965 to 1970 Mustang with any engine you want--including the 5.0-liter ‘Coyote’ V8 found in the 2014 Mustang GT.
Restomod Mustang: The Hipster of Cars

Traditional vehicle restoration, by comparison, is all about bringing an old ride back to the way it was when it rolled off the assembly line. That means using original parts where available or reproductions when necessary. Executed well, the end result is a “brand-new” 50-year old car that performs like a 50-year old car.

“I’ve been building custom street rods and muscle cars for more than 25 years but over the past decade the restomod has really increased in popularity,” said Barry White, owner and founder of Barry’s Speed Shop in Corona, Calif. “A lot of people love the classic 1960s looks, but they want a car they can get in and drive every day, not just a museum piece.”

Restomod cars are a natural evolution of hot-rods and custom cars of the 1950s and 1960s. Restoring a car close to its original appearance while adding mechanical modifications can transform it into something the original engineers might never have imagined.

“The market for restomods really took off after the release of the movie ‘Gone in Sixty Seconds’ in 2000,’’ said Larry Brogdin of Dynacorn International, manufacturer of Ford-licensed restoration body parts and complete shells for 1965 to 1970 Mustangs. “The ‘Eleanor’ Mustang in that movie, made it much more acceptable to do more extensive modifications to classic cars. Seventy percent of our business now is for upgrades and modifications rather than traditional restorations.”

Restomods can run the gamut from simply swapping in a new engine, adding rack and pinion steering or upgrading brakes to overhauling technology from the wheels up on a vintage Mustang.

Starting with a newly manufactured restoration body shell available through Ford Restoration Parts, customers can essentially buy or build a brand-new 1965-1970 Mustang fastback or convertible and equip it with any of the array of components available in the Ford Performance Parts catalog.
Matt Comps of West Bloomfield, Mich., took the vintage body approach when he bought his 1968 Mustang California Special hardtop seven years ago.

“The car already had a fuel-injected 1995 5.0-liter crate-motor installed when I bought it, but the rest of the car was in pretty rough shape,” said Comps. “I fixed up the body, installed the Baer® brakes that were used on the early 2000s Cobras and upgraded the suspension with new springs and control arms.

“The car drives great now!”

Gavin Knapp is senior manager, market research, Specialty Equipment Market Association, a trade group that represents manufacturers of automotive specialty products such as the parts used for restorations and restomods.

“The street rod and custom segment, which includes restomods has continued to grow at a steady pace, totaling $1.19 billion in 2012, up from $954 million in 2005,” said Knapp.. “For comparison, the traditional restoration market has been relatively flat over the last several years.”

New body shells are often the preferred choice for restomodders looking for state of the art performance. Brand-new metal offers the strength to stand up to the increased acceleration loading from modern high-output engines and contemporary tires, something a 50-year old body might not provide.

Ford Racing offers engines ranging from the classic 302 cubic inch OHV V8 to the very latest 5.0-liter ‘Coyote’ V8 that powers the 2014 Mustang. Builders and owners that like to tinker might prefer old-style carbureted V8s, while those who want a “classic” that will reliably start every morning, no matter what the weather, lean toward modern fuel-injected equivalents.

“One of my clients recently drove the 1970 Mustang we built for him with a new fuel-injected V8 to Oregon and back with no problems at all,” said White.

Restomods can be built to fit a wide range of budget and performance needs and it’s a trend that is becoming more popular with options from basic upgrades to brand-new vintage cars. Unlike some of the hipsters serving up your coffee, a Ford Mustang is never aloof or pretentious either.

New Ford Special Service Police Sedan with 2.0-Liter EcoBoost Expected to Achieve Best-in-Class Fuel Efficiency

At the request of law enforcement agencies looking to reduce fuel costs, Ford is launching a non-pursuit-rated “special service police” sedan using the 2.0-liter EcoBoost® engine that produces 240 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque. The special service police vehicle will combine the durability of Ford’s Police Interceptor sedan with the fuel efficiency of its 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine.

The EcoBoost engine should help make this special service police sedan the first law enforcement vehicle to achieve 30 mpg or better in EPA highway ratings expected in December. The sedan is a modified version of the 2.0-liter Ford Taurus that achieves 22 mpg city, 32 mpg highway and 26 mpg combined with the standard six-speed automatic transmission.

The fuel savings potential of the new special service police sedan compared to the model it will replace is significant. The outgoing 4.6-liter V8 Crown Victoria achieved 14 mpg city, 21 mpg highway and 17 mpg combined; the new 2.0-liter EcoBoost special service police sedan is expected to return 20 mpg city, 30 mpg highway and 23 mpg combined.

When driven 30,000 miles per year – not atypical for police agency work – and with gas prices at $3.65 per gallon, the special service police package would save agencies $5,040.92 over three years.
This same engine in Ford Taurus gained notoriety as a Ward’s 10 Best Engines winner earlier this year.

“Not every police officer needs a pursuit-rated vehicle,” said Jonathan Honeycutt, Ford police marketing manager. “As agencies look to replace older, V8-equipped cruisers with more efficient cars, Ford is at the ready with the most fuel-efficient – yet still very capable – full-size police vehicle.”

The addition of the 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine means agencies will now have four choices of powertrains in the Police Interceptor sedan, including a V6 lineup that outperforms V8 engines of years past.

Police Interceptor sedan is available with a 3.5-liter V6 with front-wheel drive, a 3.7-liter V6 with all-wheel drive and the powerhouse 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost engine with all-wheel drive – allowing police to choose the powerplant that best meets their patrol requirements.

While expected to be more fuel efficient than the 3.5-liter, 3.7-liter or 3.5-liter EcoBoost variant, the new special service police sedan retains all the essential police DNA that goes into pursuit-rated Police Interceptor sedans, including safety and durability features. Plus it is upfit-friendly and purpose-built. Commonality of parts remains an integral part of the special service police sedan.

Ford Launches Electric Vehicle Charging Network for Employees; Customers Log 30 Million All-Electric Miles

More Ford employees soon will be able to drive to work entirely on electricity, thanks to a new workplace charging network being installed at nearly every Ford facility in the U.S. and Canada.
Ford plans to install electric vehicle charging stations at more than 50 of its company offices, product development campuses and manufacturing facilities. Installation will begin later this year and roll out across company facilities throughout 2014.

“Ford’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond our fuel-efficient vehicles to include our daily workplace,” said Mike Tinskey, Ford global director of Vehicle Electrification and Infrastructure. “We know that a growing electrified vehicle infrastructure is key to making plug-in vehicles a viable option for more consumers. Ford is committed to doing our part to help grow that infrastructure.”

Ford employees will be able to charge the all-electric Focus Electric, as well as Ford’s two plug-in hybrids – the Fusion Energi and C-MAX Energi – at the charge stations. The service will initially be free to employees for the first four hours. Ford estimates it will cost the company about 50 cents to fully charge a vehicle, saving employees up to $2 in gasoline each day.

Ford’s workplace EV chargers are different from competitor programs in that they will be networked together. As a result, the company will be able to gather additional information on electrified vehicle use, such as the number of hours vehicles are charging and the amount of CO2 reduced.

Ford already has more than 1,700 charging stations at Ford dealerships and company facilities in North America. The new workplace chargers will add approximately 200 more.

Throughout the U.S. and Canada, the number of charge stations – both public and residential – is growing rapidly. In 2009, there were 3,000 known public charge stations. Today, there are more than 20,000.

30 million electric miles

Ford Fusion Energi and C-MAX Energi drivers typically make three of their four daily trips in all-electric mode, based on data from Ford’s MyFord Mobile app. In fact, every 10 days, Ford customers drive approximately 1 million miles on electricity alone. In total, Ford customers now have logged 30 million all-electric miles driving the full range of plug-in vehicles, saving more than 1.2 million kilograms of CO2.

Current customer data from the Fusion Energi and CMAX Energi is showing that three of every four trips are accomplished on electricity alone. By adding another charge during the day at the workplace, it is likely that employees will be able to accomplish all of their work week trips without using gasoline.

Electrified vehicle sales success

The popularity of Ford’s electrified vehicles led to the company’s best-ever retail U.S. sales results for Fusion Energi and C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid vehicles in August. That contributed to Ford’s best August electrified vehicle sales ever, with 8,292 vehicles sold, up 288 percent over the same period a year ago.

August also marked the 11th consecutive month Ford achieved electrified vehicle sales records. Nearly two-thirds of new Ford electrified vehicle sales are coming from buyers trading in other car brands.

The Right Car at the Time: The 1974 Ford Mustang II

  • As the Ford Mustang II turns 40 years old this fall, it remains one of the most underappreciated examples of the breed despite being among the top sellers
Forty years ago this fall, a completely redesigned second-generation Ford Mustang hit the road and it was a radical departure from the 1973 model it replaced. Mustang II arrived in dealerships just as the Middle East oil embargo caused gasoline prices to spike and new safety and emissions regulations were taking effect. It was significantly smaller and lighter than the car it replaced and for the first time since the Mustang debuted, no V8 engine was offered!

While the 1970s were a tough time for performance car enthusiasts as the raw performance of 1960s muscle cars gave way to a new breed of machines, the Mustang remained a popular choice because it evolved to be more sensibly sized and efficient to meet the times.

Here’s a look at some often overlooked facts about the Mustang II:

  • Sales of small cars exploded from 23 percent of the market in 1964 to more than 40 percent by the early 1970s
  • When Mustang II debuted in the fall of 1973, it had been engineered from the ground up as a Mustang and shared few parts with other cars
  • Despite having a choice of a 2.3-liter four-cylinder or a 2.8-liter V6 at launch, Mustang II had comparable performance to the six-cylinder and V8 in the much larger 1973 model thanks to its significantly lower weight
  • A 302-cubic-inch V8 generating 139 horsepower was added to Mustang II for the 1975 model year
  • The 1977 Mustang II with the 302 V8 produced a very respectable 247 pound-feet of torque that peaked at just 1,800 rpm, Corvettes of the same era had only 8 pound-feet more at twice the speed
  • Mustang II was featured on the most popular television show of its time, “Charlie’s Angels”
  • Mustang II was actually quite technologically advanced for its time with rack-and-pinion steering, front disc brakes, well-appointed interiors and full instrumentation as standard equipment
  • Motor Trend named Mustang II as its 1974 Car of the Year
  • In its first year of availability, Mustang II sold nearly 400,000 units, almost triple what its immediate predecessor did and it remained popular throughout its five year run
  • The base Mustang II stickered at only around $3,000
  • Loaded Cobra IIs sold for about $4,800 in 1978, examples in excellent condition often sell for well over $10,000 today

Despite becoming the ‘forgotten’ Mustang in today's enthusiast mainstream, the 1974-78 Mustang II stood up to the competition well, and deserves recognition as one of Mustang’s many success stories. Without the foresight of Ford to create the Mustang II when it did, we probably wouldn’t be celebrating 50 Years of Mustang today.

The Cobra Jet will be sold at no reserve on Saturday, Sept. 28, with proceeds benefiting the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The NHRA-legal vehicle can instantly make competitors a force in the sport. This unique car is powered by a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 mated to a T4 racing transmission, and boasts an optional traction “wheelie” bar, 8.50 ET certified chrome-moly safety cage, exclusive Cobra Jet-branded Weld wheels, three-link rear suspension, lightweight racing brakes, 9-inch rear axle, and custom Cobra-branded Recaro seats. The purpose-built factory race car was the prototype for the 2014 model year racer, and carries a unique serial number of #2014 BJMS CJXX1. Ford and American Humane Association Remind Pickup Truck Drivers: Dogs Ride Inside

Ford and the American Humane Association have teamed up in a new pet safety campaign to remind pickup truck drivers that dogs should never ride in the bed of a pickup truck. Called “Dogs Ride Inside,” the campaign reminds all drivers that simple, basic actions can prevent serious injury or death while transporting a beloved family pet.

“It is estimated that 100,000 dogs die each year riding in truck beds” said Dr. Robin Ganzert, president and CEO of American Humane Association, the country’s first national humane organization. “Unfortunately, we have all seen dogs riding in the bed of a pickup truck, which is an extremely dangerous way to transport your pet.”

“As America’s truck leader, this is an issue that’s close to the heart for us,” said Doug Scott, Ford Truck Group Marketing Manager. “We’re not asking that people go to onerous lengths while driving with pets, but even the smallest steps can make a difference in keeping all passengers in our vehicles safe.”

The American Humane Association and Ford recommend:

  • All animals should ride inside a pickup truck cab – never in the bed of a truck.
  • At the very minimum, your pet should always ride in the back seat if your truck has one. An animal in the front seat can quickly become a driver distraction and cause an accident, jeopardizing the pet and everyone else in the vehicle. The highest volume F-Series trucks – the F-150 SuperCrew® and Super Duty Crew Cab both have spacious second-row seats ideal for man’s best friend. Better yet is to restrain, contain or crate your pet with a pet carrier or specially designed pet seatbelt.
  • Dogs love sticking their heads outside of a moving car, but that’s also one of the easiest ways for a pet to be injured, whether it’s from a flying rock or even falling out of the vehicle. It’s OK to briefly roll the window down to satisfy a curious nose, but not more than that. Wind can seriously irritate mucous membranes and blow pieces of grit into their eyes.
  • Just in case you and your pet become separated, be sure that all ID tags are properly affixed to your pet’s collar and that they have your current contact information, including cell number(s). Your pet should also have an ID microchip implanted – and make sure the microchip registration and pet license information is up-to-date. Consider including the name and phone number of an emergency contact.
  • Never leave pets unattended inside of vehicles. Remember that cars heat up fast – even with the windows cracked.

This fall, Ford will sponsor a month-long adoption and pet safety tour in conjunction with Fido Friendly magazine. “Get Your Licks on Route 66” will visit 15 cities from Los Angeles to Chicago promoting pet safety and adoption; in the first four years of the tour more than 1,500 animals have been placed in new homes. Strong Customer Demand Drives Ford F-150 SVT Raptor Sales to New Heights

Ford F-150 SVT Raptor, the ultimate high-performance off-road pickup truck, continues to find new fans and sales success.

Hitting the market in 2009, Raptor has had record sales during 8 of the past 10 months and sales are up 14 percent in 2013. Raptor is also one of the fastest-turning vehicles in the automotive industry, with only a 15-day supply on dealer lots.

Day supply is common industry measurement of retail customer sales demand. The lower the figure, the less time a vehicle remains on a dealer lot before it’s sold. A 60-day supply is considered average for the auto industry.

“What’s helping drive Raptor sales is that Raptor delivers unmatched off-road performance to our customers,” said Doug Scott, Ford truck group marketing manager. “Raptor is also proof of our commitment to offer a truck for every customer and continuously improving them to meet our customers’ evolving needs.”

The 2014 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor Special Edition is the latest variant. Following the 2013 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor, which added available segment-exclusive HID headlights and industry-first factory forged-aluminum conventional wheels that can be upgraded to beadlocks, the 2014 Raptor Special Edition adds interior and exterior upgrades to further differentiate its appearance and appeal to luxury truck buyers looking for uncompromising off-road performance.

With Raptor sales expected to remain strong, Ford will increase Raptor production, growing assembly from three trucks per hour to five trucks per hour.

The growing demand and increase in production points to a larger phenomenon of increased specialization in the full-size pickup category.

While trucks traditionally have been bought by businesses and individuals to do the hard work of building and moving America, buyers have increasingly flocked to pickups offering exceptional luxury, performance or in the case of the new Raptor Special Edition, both.

SVT Raptor prowess and power

Since launching as a 2010 model, the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor has set the benchmark for low- and high-speed off-road performance through aggressive all-terrain tires, industry-exclusive internal triple-bypass FOX Racing Shox dampers, skid plates and standard Hill Descent Control .

A Raptor development imperative has been continuous improvement, so Ford expanded Raptor’s footprint for 2011 with a four-door SuperCrew® model joining the two-door SuperCab original.

For 2012 Ford began offering a grille-mounted camera to improve driver visibility when climbing over rocks or other obstacles. The 2012 addition of a Torsen® limited-slip differential to Raptor’s 4WD system enables the truck to balance traction between both front wheels.

For 2013 industry-exclusive beadlock-capable wheels were added to help increase grip in low-traction conditions, along with high-intensity discharge headlamps for improved visibility. SYNC® with MyFord Touch® also was made available for added connectivity.

SVT Raptor is available exclusively with a 6.2-liter V8 engine producing 411 horsepower and 434 lb.-ft. of torque, mated to an electronic six-speed automatic transmission with tow/haul mode and SelectShift Automatic ® functionality. The 4WD system features electronic shift-on-the-fly capability for the transfer case.

The front axle features a Torsen differential with 4.10:1 gearing. The rear axle is also 4.10:1, with a high speed electronic-locking differential.

Ford Supports Community-Based Student Learning at Nine Colleges and Universities with $225,000 in Grants

Ford Motor Company Fund is awarding $225,000 in Ford College Community Challenge grants to nine colleges and universities in support of the growing trend of service learning on college campuses.

The Ford College Community Challenge (Ford C3) is a national challenge grant competition that recognizes colleges and universities that utilize a school’s resources to address an urgent community need related to the grant’s theme: Building Sustainable Communities. Unlike many college grant programs, Ford C3 requires colleges to create proposals that have significant student input, involvement and leadership from beginning to end.

Campus Compact, the only national higher education association dedicated to campus-based civic engagement, partnered with Ford Fund on this year’s grant program. The organization hosted a recent conference for academic leaders and students on past Ford C3 case studies. About 62% of its 1,200 member campuses require service-learning as part of the core curriculum, up from 51% in 2010.

"The Ford C3 winners, many of which are at Campus Compact member schools, are impressive examples of community engagement and service learning," said Maureen Curley, president of Campus Compact. "We are proud to be working with the Ford Fund which has shown tremendous leadership in supporting innovative campus community partnerships."

The 2013 Ford C3 winners are:

  • Arizona State University to support development of a mobile application to facilitate the recovery and delivery of rapidly perishable foods from food service businesses to hungry families in the suburbs of Phoenix
  • Brown University to work with a village in the Kuttanad region of Kerala, India, on locally-built rainwater collection systems operating under a pay-per-use model to provide a sustainable supply of potable water
  • College for Creative Studies to support student design and pilots of creative and easily replicable solutions for common challenges associated with urban farming in Detroit
  • Essex County College for a rainwater harvesting system to reduce usage of city water at a model urban hydroponic food project that is increasing healthy food access in under-served areas of Newark, N.J.
  • Michigan State University for students in the College of Engineering to develop and test a teaching module, software libraries and cloud support to enable high school students in the Lansing, Mich., area to create Java programs that gather information about local energy usage
  • University of Michigan for designing and installing a net-zero water consumption system for the nation’s oldest net-zero house, a demonstration project in Ann Arbor, Mich.
  • University of Texas at Arlington for creating videos for differing educational levels and language translations for use in combating diabetes among diverse populations in Arlington, Texas
  • Virginia Commonwealth University and University of Richmond to support design of a web and phone-based application that combines existing transportation options with new technology for accessing services and schedules in Richmond, Va.
  • Wayne State University to expand urban farming, nutrition education, fresh produce sales to under-served groups and support for local growers in the Detroit area

How Ford Put a 1966 Mustang Atop the World’s Tallest Building

In 1965, the Ford Mustang was the talk of the nation. The first calendar year of production saw sales of more than 400,000 units, well over the 100,000 units projected in the original business plan, making it the fastest-selling new car of all time.

Today, with instantaneous multimedia communication around the world through the Internet and social media, generating marketing buzz is a huge industry. In 1965, it was a bit more challenging.
Robert Leury, vice president and general manager of the Empire State Building saw the Mustang sales figures and thought he’d love to gain a slice of that frenzy. In the fall of 1965, Leury invited Ford division merchandising manager William Benton in for a meeting to discuss how to pull off a headline-grabbing spectacle. What follows is one of the most outrageous examples of 1960s-era advertising moxie.

After the meeting Benton returned to Dearborn and formed a tidy team of eight with one goal: Put a 1966 Mustang on the 86th floor observation deck of the world’s tallest, most iconic building. The challenges were significant. Due to the building’s stupendous spire and sloping upper architecture, it was determined that lowering a complete car onto the observation deck via helicopter was just too complex and dangerous, so another approach had to be developed.

This is where Ford engineers set to work. The crew took a trip to New York, measuring tapes in hand, carefully noting the dimensions of the building’s doorways, halls, rooms and elevators. After some back-of-the-napkin calculations the plan was set: Slice a perfectly good ‘66 Mustang convertible into pieces, stuff it into the passenger elevator, then put it back together at the top.

The trick would be to split the car and put it back together in such a way that it wasn’t apparent as anything but a production vehicle – no cuts to the sheet metal, no trick hinges or fake fiberglass panels. Everything had to appear to be stock Mustang.

Back in Dearborn, the team went to work. In order to fit the 15-foot-long Mustang into the seven-foot-tall elevators, they decided to cut the body of a white convertible into four main sections: windshield, front end, center body and rear end.

The front seats, center console and doors were temporarily removed to simplify access. Next, the engine, transmission and driveshaft were removed. At this point, they could do the dirty work and cut the floor pan out – the rear slice was done right at the rocker panel below the trailing edge of the door, while the front followed the seam at the bottom of the leading edge of the door. The final cut was at the base of the windshield frame. Now the trick was putting it back together. A series of brackets was designed and fabricated so the pieces of the car could slide together and be bolted in place, once again rigid enough to act as a display car.

To make the job of moving the heavy pieces around managable, a rolling dolly was built to guide the front and rear halves into and out of the elevators. The team made three practice runs up similar elevators at the Ford headquarters in Dearborn and everything checked out. The only thing left was to set a date.

At 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 20, 1965, the crew, decked out in crisp white overalls, met at the base of the 1,472-foot-tall Empire State Building and unloaded the car. They disassembled it in front of astonished onlookers. Everything was progressing as planned and they started moving parts up the elevator.

Despite all the upfront planning, the front section was found to be exactly ¼-inch-too tall for the elevator door; the steering wheel was in the way. After some careful jostling, it was slipped through the doorway. Once at observation deck level, the team rolled the sections out the 32-inch-wide door and reassembled the Mustang in gusting 40 mph winds by 4:30 a.m. – just in time for a short break, before news helicopters gathered to begin photographing the car from above.

By 11 a.m. photographers had gotten their fill and the car was taken apart once again and reassembled in the observation floor’s inner room, where it greeted an estimated 14,000 visitors that first day and countless more for many months to come.

This sort of high-profile marketing no doubt played a part in getting people into showrooms that year. In 1966, Ford sold an incredible 607,568 Mustangs – the most ever in a single year. By March 1966, an unbelievable 1 million copies had been sold since launch – just about the same time the little white Mustang convertible on top of the Empire State Building was about to retire from the highest showroom in the world.

Ford Delivers Best August Hybrid Sales Ever with C-MAX Energi and Fusion Energi Achieving Record Sales

Ford delivered its best August electrified vehicle sales ever with more than 8,292 sales, up 288 percent over the same period a year ago. August marks the 11th consecutive month that Ford has achieved electrified vehicle sales records.

The C-MAX Hybrid was a key driver in helping Ford deliver its best August hybrid sales ever and continuing to establish Ford as a major player in the hybrid market, trailing only Toyota.  Ford C-MAX hybrids sales jumped twelve percent in August over the previous month, with 3,032 units sold.

“Our dealers continue to tell us that the C-MAX Hybrid brings new customers to their showrooms, customers who previously hadn’t considered a Ford vehicle,” said C.J. O’Donnell, Ford electrified vehicles group marketing manager. “Customers love the outstanding all-around package that the vehicle provides, all while getting class-leading fuel economy.”

Nearly two-thirds of the sales came from conquest buyers, people who traded in other car brands. Highest on the trade-in list? Toyota Prius and Honda CR-V.

Strong C-MAX Hybrid sales continue to increase Ford’s presence in California, accounting for more than 30 percent of the brand’s hybrid growth in the west.

C-MAX Hybrid and Fusion Hybrid delivered sales records in key hybrid markets in August. Both vehicles recorded their best sales months ever in Washington, D.C., San Francisco and Seattle. Fusion Hybrid delivered its second best-selling month in Los Angeles, just two units shy of hitting its previous record, while C-MAX Hybrid delivered its best sales month year-to-date in New York, with sales up 35 percent over last month.

Ford’s plug-in hybrids also recorded record sales in August. Fusion Energi and C-MAX Energi delivered their best sales month year-to-date with 600 and 621 units sold, respectively, with nearly 50 percent of units sold in California.

“No-Compromise” Hybrid

The latest J.D. Power APEAL research, which measures the satisfaction that owners feel about their new vehicles, shows that Ford’s plan to offer a hybrid that gives hybrid drivers a vehicle that offers power and performance, fun to drive, and met their needs for carrying people and cargo is paying off. According to the data, C-MAX Hybrid is scoring high in power and refinement.

Engine responsiveness, smoothness, passing power/acceleration, interior quietness and visibility are all ranked significantly higher than the segment average.

Customers also reporting that the C-MAX Hybrid is “more luxurious” and “more innovative,” as well as more environmentally friendly.

Extending the Power of Choice

Ford announced earlier this week that it will offer a choice of three distinct electrified vehicles in European showrooms by 2014 to complement its line-up of fuel efficient gasoline and diesel powered vehicles.

Coming next year will be the new C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid and the Mondeo Hybrid. They will join the Ford Focus Electric, a zero emission battery electric vehicle built in Saarlouis, Germany, and now on sale in Europe.
