Ford Becomes No. 2 Non-Premium Brand in J.D. Power's 2017 Initial Quality Study; Ford's Best Ranking in Report's 31-Year History

  • Ford has earned the No. 2 ranking of all non-premium brands in this year’s J.D. Power Initial Quality Study – the brand’s best ranking in the report’s 31-year history
  • Expedition and Mustang earn segment quality awards, with seven Ford and Lincoln models leading the top three of their segments
  • Ford’s has been improving the capability and quality of new technologies, including SYNC 3 equipped on 70 percent of vehicles

DEARBORN, Mich., June 21, 2017 – Ford has jumped to No. 2 of all non-premium brands in J.D. Power’s 2017 Initial Quality Study – the brand’s best-ever ranking in the annual study now in its 31st year.

The Ford brand improved to 86 problems per 100 vehicles from 102 in 2016. This improvement helped Ford tie for fourth among all brands from 11th in 2016.

“As Ford accelerates the pace of innovation, we believe this best-ever quality ranking demonstrates our new technologies are reliable and easy to use,” said Bennie Fowler, group vice president, Quality. “The rapid improvements rated by third-party quality experts such as J.D. Power motivate us to improve our fitness even more as quality is a race that’s never finished.” Seven Ford and Lincoln vehicles are in the top three in their respective segments. Ford Expedition and Mustang took top quality honors in their segments.

Ford is delivering new innovations with better quality than average as the industry has faced challenges rolling out new advancements such as connectivity and driver-assist features. Specifically, Ford is:

  • Equipping approximately 70 percent of vehicles with advanced SYNC 3 technology with significant quality improvements
  • Offering more models in the United States with popular driver-assist features such as adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning than any other full-line manufacturer.
  • Continuing the rapid rollout of advanced EcoBoost engine technology and lightweighting innovations such as aluminum-bodied F-Series trucks – combining to deliver improved performance, capability and efficiency.

“We are moving into an exciting new period of innovation in transportation, so it is very important to keep the human experience at the center of all we do, including delivering any new technology with quality,” said Fowler.

Ford F-150 and Expedition's New Advanced Engines Maximize Lightweight Materials for Greater Performance, Efficiency

  • Four years after moving to advanced high-strength, military-grade aluminum-alloy bodies for Built Ford Tough trucks, customers are receiving additional benefits – including improved performance, capability and fuel economy
  • All-new 3.3-liter V6 delivers even more power, torque and better EPA-estimated gas mileage than the previous 3.5-liter V6, further reinforcing how Ford F-150’s light-weighting strategy enables customers to get more done with two fewer cylinders
  • All-new Expedition offers its most powerful 3.5-liter EcoBoost® engine yet, rated at up to 400 horsepower and 480 lb.-ft. of torque; Auto Start-Stop and all-new 10-speed transmission come standard, with available best-in-class towing of 9,300 pounds

DEARBORN, Mich., June 16, 2017 – Lightweight advanced materials, plus new engines and a newly available 10-speed transmission bring new 2018 Ford F-150 and all-new 2018 Ford Expedition customers even better performance, capability and efficiency.

The latest benefits tie back to Ford’s investment years ago in its high-strength, military-grade aluminum alloy bodies and high-strength steel frames. This helped save up to 700 pounds of weight on the all-new F-150, allowing customers to tow and haul more than ever with their trucks.

Since then, Ford has expanded high-strength, military-grade aluminum alloy bodies and high-strength steel frames to the latest F-Series Super Duty heavy-duty pickup trucks and all-new Expedition full-size SUV. The weight savings from these strong and lightweight materials is further enhanced by new and improved engines.

“Each F-150 and Expedition customer has unique needs, and we can deliver even more of the capability and efficiency they are looking for, thanks to our strategic use of lightweight materials and innovative V6 engines,” said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford executive vice president, Product Development and Purchasing. “Our dedication to this kind of innovation helps our F-Series and Expedition customers take care of their growing families and businesses, all with fewer stops for fuel along the way.”

New 2018 Ford F-150

Customers have snapped up 75 percent of new trucks this year with V6 engines. For 2018, the new F-150 arrives with an even more capable powertrain lineup and more V6 choices.

For 2018, F-150 introduces an even smaller, more efficient 3.3-liter V6 that adds dual port and direct-injection technology to deliver more power and torque than the previous 3.5-liter V6, plus improved projected EPA-estimated gas mileage – a win-win for customers.

Aiding in light-weighting, the standard 3.3-liter V6 in the 2018 F-150 is projected to offer a 5 percent power-to-weight ratio improvement versus the steel-bodied 2014 F-150 equipped with 3.7-liter V6 – with better anticipated fuel efficiency and performance.

With advanced dual port and direct-injection technology, the all-new second-generation 2.7-liter EcoBoost® engine delivers a 25 lb.-ft. increase in torque, and at lower engine speeds compared to a traditional V8. Like the second-generation 3.5-liter EcoBoost that debuted last model year, the 2.7-liter will be paired to a segment-exclusive 10-speed automatic transmission for 2018.

The 5.0-liter V8 also is enhanced for 2018. This naturally aspirated engine brings significant upgrades including advanced dual port and direct-injection technology for 10 more horsepower and 13 ft.-lb. of torque. In addition, the engine features spray-on bore liner technology featured in the high-performance Mustang GT350, all to squeeze out even more weight from the aluminum block.

For the first time, the V8 is paired with a Ford-built 10-speed automatic transmission. EPA-estimated fuel economy will be announced closer to market availability.

F-150 adds an available all-new 3.0-liter Power Stroke® V6 diesel – designed, engineered and tested in-house – paired with the 10-speed automatic. The first diesel engine offered for F-150 will be available next spring.

  • Expedition FX4 Off-Road Package standard equipment includes off-road-tuned shocks, all-new electronic limited-slip rear differential, skid plates, side steps and FX4 badging
  • New Terrain Management System™ enables the driver to select modes to optimize driving dynamics to environmental conditions – from snow to mud, sand and more

DEARBORN, Mich., June 16, 2017 – For the more than 20 percent of Expedition owners that use their SUV for off-road adventure, Ford introduces the all-new 2018 Expedition FX4 Off-Road Package, making this the most off-road-capable Expedition ever.

“The FX4 Off-Road package delivers off-road driving confidence,” said Mike Kipley, Expedition vehicle engineering manager. “The technology we’re using works to adapt to different driving conditions so customers can enjoy the adventure without worry.”

Expedition’s all-new high-strength, aluminum-alloy body and redesigned high-strength steel frame form the foundation for its off-road and towing capabilities. The use of advanced materials enabled engineers to save up to 300 pounds, with much of the savings reinvested to offer customers more technology and features than ever before.

FX4 Off-Road Package includes:

  • Patented electronic limited-slip rear differential to help improve off-road performance in low-traction situations by automatically varying power output side-to-side, depending on which wheels need extra traction. With 3.73:1 gearing, the electronic limited-slip rear differential also improves towing performance and capability
  • Off-road-tuned shocks more stiffly tuned to keep wheels in contact with the road
  • All-terrain tires with thicker sidewalls to maintain a smooth ride while delivering the traction needed over rough terrain
  • Seven different skid plates that serve as underbody armor and protect critical areas. They include a new sand shield to protect the turbocharger intercoolers from getting clogged when driving through tall berms in sand dunes, plus steel plates to protect steering gear, engine, transmission and transfer case and a full-length guard for the fuel tank. To help climb over tall or steep obstacles, the chin spoiler beneath the front bumper has been shortened to improve approach angles
  • Unique 18-inch Magnetic Metallic-painted cast-aluminum wheels
  • Chrome running boards
  • FX4 badging on the liftgate and front fender
  • New rubber floor liners featuring deep side sills that can be removed and cleaned of any mud, sand or water that gets dragged in on family adventures

Expedition’s all-new easy-to-use Terrain Management System™ lets FX4 customers select from seven special drive modes that help Expedition automatically adapt to different road conditions. This includes normal for around town driving, sport for more spirited trips, tow/haul for improved towing and hauling performance, eco for enhanced fuel economy, grass/gravel/snow for loose terrain, sand for low traction situations and mud/rut for uneven surfaces. Expedition FX4 drivers also can manually select either 2WD or 4WD modes in a given drive mode, depending on their preferences and terrain.

The all-new Expedition provides generous space, connectivity and smart new technology. The Expedition FX4 Off-Road Package has a powerful 3.5-liter EcoBoost® engine, rated at 375 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque, plus standard Auto Start-Stop, an all-new 10-speed transmission and available best-in-class towing of 9,300 pounds.

The all-new Expedition’s roomy, flexible interior offers seating for up to eight people with a wide cargo area to hold their gear, depending on cargo weight and load distribution. Expedition features a second-row seat with tip-and-slide functionality – providing easy access to the third row without the need to first remove a child safety seat. Once in the third row, even adults will appreciate more legroom and reclining seats.

The all-new Expedition lineup, including the FX4 Off-Road Package, goes on sale this fall.

Road Trip! Family Fun and Adventure Starts with a Ford

  • More motorhomes are built on Ford chassis than any other brand – giving families a wide choice in vehicles for their summer adventures
  • Class B and Class C motorhomes, including those built on a Ford Transit platform, are enjoying the biggest sales gains, with shipments up more than 30 percent year-to-date, according to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association
  • U.S. RV market is on the rise, with total shipments up 15 percent year-over-year at the end of 2016, and 11.7 percent through March, the association reports
  • RV industry provides 290,000 U.S. jobs and has a $49.7 billion annual impact on country’s economy, according to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association

DEARBORN, Mich., June 1, 2017 – Growing numbers of families are answering the call of the road by embarking on adventures in RVs built on Ford chassis. Ford is America’s best-selling motorhome chassis manufacturer.

RV shipments were up 15 percent year-over-year in 2016, hitting their highest level in 40 years, according to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association. The trend continues; through March, total RV shipments were up nearly 12 percent. The association estimates the RV industry provides 290,000 U.S. jobs and has a $49.7 billion annual impact on the country’s economy.

The biggest sales increase is coming from the smallest motorhomes. Shipments of camper vans – standard vans like Ford Transit outfitted with sleeping and living areas – are up more than 36 percent through March. Class C motorhomes – RVs built on cutaway chassis including the Ford E-Series consisting of vehicle frame, suspension, powertrain and cab – are also rolling out at a rapid pace, with shipments up more than 32 percent through March, according to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association.

Ford leads the motorhome chassis market in Classes A, B and C, holding 63.8 percent share in 2016, up from 61.2 percent in 2015, according to data from Statistical Surveys Inc., a market analysis company specializing in the RV, marine and manufactured housing industries. In 2016, Ford’s share of the Class C market with Transit and E-Series cutaways was 69 percent, up from 65 percent in 2015, while its share of the Class A market, led by the F-53 chassis, was 67.6 percent, up from 66 percent. RV manufacturers just started building Class B motorhomes on Transit last year.

“We’re seeing tremendous growth in Ford Transit and E-Series sales to the RV market,” says Dennis Bearden, Ford RV and pool account manager. “Last year, our Class C motorhome sales were up 28 percent, and as more motorhome manufacturers build on Transit, our Class B sales are also climbing. Combine that with our long-established popularity in the Class A market, and it’s apparent families looking for adventure of any size can find it in a Ford-based motorhome.”

Like most RVs built on them, Ford Transit, E-Series and F-53 chassis are assembled in the United States for the North American market. For 2017, Ford updated its E-Series cutaway and stripped chassis to offer the 6.2-liter V8 engine proven in F-Series Super Duty trucks. This optional engine provides 356 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm and 331 horsepower – representing a significant improvement over the 5.4-liter engine it replaced. Also new this year is an optional rearview camera.

The A, B, Cs of motorhome classes
Class A motorhomes are generally the largest and roomiest. They’re typically built on stripped truck chassis or bus chassis that have the highest gross vehicle weight ratings for motorhome chassis. Often quite luxurious, Class A motorhomes are frequently seen in RV parks, at motorsports events and other outings across the country.

A Class B camper van drives most like a regular family van. The ultimate in maneuverability and compact comfort, these cozy campers are the top choice of couples and small families wanting to venture far away from RV parks and experience the increasingly popular #vanlife. Although RV manufacturers make camper vans, many do-it-yourselfers design and build their own.

For active families, Class C motorhomes offer greater maneuverability and a more compact size than Class A motorhomes, but are roomier than camper vans. They often include a sleeping loft over the cab. These smaller adventure mobiles are popular with outdoor enthusiasts who use them to go motorbiking, snowboarding, kayaking and exploring.
